A major European development bank has made its first official move into Senegal to help local businesses trade safely on the global stage.
The London-based European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has set up a €15 million trade finance line with Ecobank Senegal. Instead of simple loans, this money acts as a financial shield. The EBRD will use these funds to issue payment guarantees to foreign “confirming banks.” If a local Senegalese business imports goods, the international seller’s bank is guaranteed payment—taking the commercial and political risk out of the transaction.
This is a major step for Senegal, which officially became an EBRD shareholder last year. Beyond the trade guarantees, the EBRD has opened a resident office in Dakar to roll out customized coaching, risk-sharing tools, and credit lines specifically designed to help the country’s small and medium enterprises scale up.
