The Ministry of Communication, Technology, and Innovation has launched a national digital capitalization drive to insulate small businesses against traditional brick-and-mortar limitations. The newly inaugurated Digital Entrepreneurship Program for SMEs is structured to transition 100 selected enterprise owners from localized trading models into active participants in the digital economy by upgrading their online footprint and operational efficiency.
The public call for applications, which concluded in early July 2026, revealed strong demand for digital modernization. The program attracted 400 institutional entries from across the country, with 70% of the applicant pool originating from entrepreneurs aged 18 to 34.
Curriculum and Operational Execution
The selected cohort will undergo a rigorous, seven-day intensive digital residency blending direct corporate mentorship, live workflow simulations, and data-driven operational exercises.
State administrators emphasized that the curriculum directly targets systemic merchant pain points, such as stagnant customer acquisition, volatile sales pipelines, underdeveloped brand equity, and low utilization of modern enterprise software.
Addressing Labor Market Realities
This technical training program is part of a broader macroeconomic strategy to address high underemployment and youth unemployment, which the African Development Bank estimated at 10% in recent baseline studies. The strategy follows the late 2025 deployment of the Learn2Earn framework, which was engineered to train young demographics for global digital freelancing markets.
By upgrading the domestic business ecosystem, economic planners hope to mitigate significant labor migration pressures. Recent Afrobarometer research indicated that 57% of the domestic population has weighed emigration options, with 55% identifying the search for stable, high-value employment as their primary driver. Providing small businesses with the infrastructure to compete in digital marketplaces serves as a vital anchor to retain local talent and build sustainable domestic wealth.
