Historically reliant on diamonds for approximately 70% of national exports and one-third of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP), the Southern African nation faces severe cash flow constraints. To hedge against this structural decline, the country is unlocking its renewable energy sector, securing $100 million in private capital to finance the upcoming 100-megawatt (MW) Tati Solar Project.

Targeting the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP): Slated for full commercial operations in 2027, the Tati Solar Project is structured as an export asset rather than a domestic utility. The facility will feed generated electricity directly into the SAPP, a cooperative network of 12 member states. Excess electricity from the plant will back-feed Botswana’s national grid, positioning the country as a regional net-exporter of clean power.

Capitalizing on Sub-Regional Energy Crises: Investor appetite for Botswana’s energy infrastructure is growing due to severe power deficits among neighboring SAPP countries, including South Africa and Angola. Many of these nations are dealing with aging thermal power infrastructure and grid collapses.
