African Industries Group (AIG) has secured a historic 500-hectares land allocation in Niger State to construct a co-located utility-scale solar facility and steel manufacturing complex. Executed through its subsidiary, Abuja Steel Mills, the project integrates heavy metal manufacturing with independent renewable energy generation. The infrastructure pipeline serves as a strategic private-sector model to decouple intensive manufacturing from Nigeria’s unstable national grid and high-cost diesel generation frameworks.
The multi-tiered industrial investment aligns with several national economic and resource initiatives:
-
Shaping the Niger State Industrial Corridor: Niger State Governor Mohammed Umar Bago has leveraged the state’s natural advantages to position the region as a primary industrial corridor. The state government announced plans to gazette an additional 200,000 hectares of industrial land extending toward Kaduna State. This layout is designed to capitalize on the Ajaokuta–Kaduna–Kano (AKK) gas pipeline infrastructure, high solar irradiance levels, and the state’s substantial domestic hydropower base, which includes the Kainji, Jebba, Shiroro, and Zungeru dams.
-
Macroeconomic Import Substitution Targets: Minister of State for Industry, Trade, and Investment John Enoh emphasized that large-scale private investments are critical to reducing Nigeria’s heavy dependence on imported steel. By building local capacity for raw and processed steel products, the facility aims to conserve foreign exchange reserves, strengthen domestic construction supply chains, and generate long-term industrial employment.
-
Anchoring the $1 Trillion Economy Mandate: Steel Development Minister Shuaibu Audu linked the massive solar-steel expansion to the federal government’s target of building a $1 trillion economy by 2030. Raj Gupta, Chairman of African Industries Group—a conglomerate employing over 10,000 people across 30 manufacturing plants—stated that the clean-energy setup could become the largest solar asset supporting a heavy steel mill anywhere in West Africa, offering an actionable blueprint for cleaner industrial growth across sub-Saharan Africa.
