The ethnic haircare and protective styling sector, traditionally characterized by highly fragmented, independent operators, is seeing shifts toward standardized corporate operations. At its flagship Houston location, Jalia Walda Salon (operating under Express Braiders LLC) is proving that complex protective styling—which traditionally requires up to eight hours of individual labor—can be delivered in a fraction of the time without dropping quality.
Since its launch in 2024 by founder Jalia Nassolo, the enterprise has scaled to employ approximately 200 beauty professionals. The startup’s rapid growth is driven by its specialized, team-based workflow model, which replaces the traditional single-braider system with coordinated, multi-person assembly teams.
The Mechanics of Collaborative Braiding
This “express” model does not rely on cutting corners. Instead, it works by breaking down and coordinating the braiding process. By pairing highly trained prep-stylists (who handle wash, blow-dry, and parting) with master braiders (who execute technical feed-in knotless, boho, or intricate West African tribal styles), the salon significantly reduces the time a client spends in the chair.
This operational setup directly addresses the key pain point of traditional braiding: the long, exhausting appointments that restrict customer volume and strain stylists physically.
Building a Franchisable Talent Pipeline
Finding and maintaining skilled talent is the biggest bottleneck for scaling service-based businesses. To secure its supply chain, the enterprise has built its own internal training and mentorship program. This initiative has already trained dozens of aspiring braiders, equipping them with both technical styling skills and essential business management practices.
The long-term roadmap for the corporate group includes setting up dedicated beauty academies, rolling out branded haircare products, and launching a standardized franchise model to expand into major African diaspora markets across the US and Europe. By applying strict corporate organization, automated team scheduling, and digital marketing to a historically informal industry, the venture shows how traditional styling practices can be scaled into highly profitable, institutional-grade retail chains.
